I used to be a dirty spline modeller, rhino was good for that.
You need to look past deforming primitives and using splines. Splines are good for hard body modelling like making peoples logos 3d etc. but if you want to start making trickier things like peoples faces and such, polygon modelling is the way to go. Just my opinion.
