I would suggest going to the newsstand and checking out some magazines, that is often what I do when at a loss...at least it provides a starting point.
From there you can harvest URLs and get a feel for some "minimal" identities that work well as containers for messages and products.
We will probably have to start a new thread about which magazines to check, but off the top of my head:
URB
Tokion
Elemental
Nylon
Mass Appeal
etc.You will find more like this in the newsstand(dont know where u live, so I am mentioning what LA stores have in general).
They can be a good styleguide, to at least give you a view of the zeitgeist as it stands this month, but I think that the enduring brands are the ones with a more minimal approach that allows them to assimilate transient fashions/styles as necessary.
