well there are various ways. making the dimensions smaller reduces size as well as reducing the framerate. also reducing the colours (thousands instead of millions) and using a proper encoding / compression method like for instance sorenson will reduce it as well. all in all it will affect the quality so you have to tweak with it to find a perfect balance between quality, size, colours and framerate. i don't know if you have mediacleaner but that's a really good app to use. there's also a new format .mp4 which compresses really well without relatively losing too much quality.
