you don't *have* to use remoting but yeah it can be complicated. that's why macromedia can charge what they do for their server. if you were to just keep on polling a server to find out what had changed you'll find that the processing on that server would rocket because it needs to open a new connection each time it sends back the enquiry or even receives it.
it's a big can of smelly worms, unfortunately.
