Multiply does not knock out the white. This only works if there's a darker color underneath.
To knock out the white:
double click a layer in layers pallete and move the right of the top slider under 'blend if'.
To fix the aliasing drag 'half' of the slider with option.
another option is to use the 'extract' command.
there are many ways to knock out the white, and there isn't one way that will work for evry situation.
btw, you can select all, command+shift+c to copy merged into a new layer to do what it is I think your trying to do.
