not sure why it won't work for you. i just opened an rgb color image, made the background layer into layer 0, then brought in a grayscale tiff, a black logo with white around it. i 'multiplied' it, then with the logo layer selected i linked the two layers, merged the linked layers and i still have it intact, no whitespace around the logo. i'm not sure why it won't work for you dude.
