  uh- hit the F key in photoshop and your desktop disappears-
  Or full screen in almost any app really-you know you could just use Linux if you want no real desktop and fancy icons.

  By the way- go to your system preferences icon/universal access... and you can switch your whole system to greyscale without bothering to waste time making greyscale 3D background and icons.
