unmaksing .png ribbons in AE 3d layers can be fun..not quite as comprehensively effective, but does a good impression, especially with some quick camera movements and motion blur..
Could even sequences/footage of waving 'ribbons' you create by adding wave distortion toa static ribbon pic.
