    Dear Sen./Rep. [ insert member's last name ]:

In the weeks ahead, it is likely that you will be asked to consider a proposed constitutional amendment that would require states to discriminate against same-sex couples and their families. I strongly believe that this amendment would violate the principles of equality and fairness so central to the Constitution, and I urge you to oppose it.

Never in our history have we amended the Constitution to require discrimination against one group of Americans, and we should not set that terrible precedent. Despite what some amendment supporters say, there is no moderate, compassionate or respectful way to consign millions of Americans to second-class citizenship.

Americans are debating civil marriage, as they have done many times before. Past debates, often considered "crises" in their day, have helped marriage evolve into a fairer institution, and Congress and state legislatures have adapted laws to reflect our changing attitudes. Amending the Constitution would stifle this vital debate and the progress it could produce.

There is, and will continue to be, disagreement about marriage in our country. But there can be no legitimate disagreement that the Constitution is no place for discrimination. I urge you to stand with us on that principle and vote against amending the Constitution to require discrimination.
