depends if the school has a strict brand guideline or whatever. i can see how an engineering dept. could have a logo that would contrast your traditional greek/old world visuals universities often have and still work well.

----------true, they may be lenient but the unviersity legal dept may have strict guidliness, I know that the U.C. Berekeley seal can only be modified by a dept to a point. They get touchy if the dept alters the seal enough that it doesnt seem to be apart of the University. I assume you can submit more than only one submission for the contest, you might want to present some ideas that contrast themselves in extremes. The thought is that once looking at one and then the other, they are inclined to remeber your designs more so, and it lends a bit of range to your name.
