    You could do it the old school way if the object is not very complex.

    (on a Mac)
    Select the object and do CMD-C (copy). Then do CMD-2 (lock it in place). Then do a CMD-B (paste behind). Now select the object you pasted behind the first object and start bumping up the stroke.

    This is one of the best ways to stroke text and other objects because you never fuss with the original paths... When you stroke Fonts on their own they start to deform.
