Using a Dell Laptop (Inspiron 8600) - has 1 gig ram, 7200 HDD, 128meg Raedon video, DVD writer - my first time using a laptop as a design workstation - I plug an external 20inch into the back and use it with 2 screens. I barely touch my home PC anymore. Had zero problems. I actually find it faster than a PIV 3gig machine I had at my last job - maybe it just feels faster :)
I think the main appeal with Dell laptops is what you get for your money and knowing that it's not hacked together from misc. pieces by some backyard shop.
