Depending on the school, content is king.
If you talk about the synergy between Cartesian Philosophy and your work, that's a pretty good statement, if you talk about how flash is really cool, you'll be torn to shreds.
Is this for design or art?
NEVER! Say your parents are a big influence, it's immature, use literary cliches like "Purpose is defined by webster's dictionary as..."
DEFINITLEY! Be as creative as possible, I've seen more people get into school, by writing poems and recording music (non-rap, non-protools) then anything else.
