this country was founded by god-fearing white males. women, slaves, indentured servants, free blacks, and native americans were not considered persons. Originally, you had to own a certain amount of land to even be able to vote. You had to own even more land to be able to run for governor.
So of course there's lots of religious references, but somehow those white males put together a remarkable document in the Constitution that allowed the people of this country to give themselves the rights they wanted and felt they deserved.
Take this court case as just another step in the secularization of the country. Religious flag wavers hate it when you use the constitution against them.
