Whatever you do, go to a music store and play with different instruments. It's really important when you're learning that the bass fits. If the neck is too thick, you will suffer more.
Yamaha is a decent starter bass.
I have a 68 Fender precision with an Ampeg amp. woohoo...its embarrassing how poorly I play such a beautiful instrument.
