Regarding the completely miserable existence of Mitch McConnell, if he dies, the governor, Andy Beshear, a Democrat doesn't get to appoint a new senator. The governor is required to appoint a successor from a list of three names provided by the executive committee of the outgoing senator's party.

Beshear does not get to freely appoint a replacement — but not because he must choose from three GOP names anymore. Under current law, Kentuckydbloc - fills the vacancy by special election.dbloc
