Had a crazy storm here over the weekend with intense winds. Trees down all over town, including one of my neighbors onto my roof. The tree landed and stayed on our roof, making a small hole from one of the branches. Neighbor is a total wild card, definitely either battling with addiction or recovery or both. So my wife and I knock on his door - because he never looks out the back of his house even - and told him what happened. We ask if he can check his homeowners insurance policy to pay for the tree removal. He immediately offers to help, apologizes for not taking care of the trees sooner (we'd talked about it in the past), and asks to come see the damage. He demands that we get three estimates from tree services, etc. But we want the tree off our house asap. A tree guy comes to give a quote later that day, and when he gives his price of $1200, my. neighbor loses his shit. WHAT? YOU'RE A THIEF! THAT JOB ONLY TAKES 20 MINUTES!
We were shocked at how aggressive he got so quickly, and the tree guy threw up his hands and said "go get someone else".
30 mins later a text from neighbor apologizing saying he works construction and knows what things cost, blah blah. But he asks if I can bargain with tree guy to get a lower price - but neighbor wants to "supervise" the job. Oh brother. I call tree guy, get him down to $1000, neighbor agrees to pay, they bring the crane, remove the tree, slide it into the woodchipper, and all is good. Neighbor paid, and brought over some roof patching kit for us to use until we get it properly fixed - hey, that's really nice.
It was a nice reminder to always be civil towards your neighbors, but damn...it was a wild ride with him!
