Trump is evil. He’s fucking crazy and shouldn’t be in the whitehouse. Ever again. Not even to visit. He should be banned from federal buildings
But, also, man I’m so sick of my community on the left being so blind as to why. For so long, we’re all just like “oh his followers are stupid morons.” Or like “they’re all brainwashed by Fox News” which is true for some of his followers sure, but not everyone who votes for him.
I truly believe that the left needs to shut the fuck up and listen to the Trump voters. Not just watch some bullshit on YouTube. But actually listen and EMPATHIZE with the full broad spectrum of Trump voters. You don’t have to agree! But just listen and try to empathize.
The first reason is that listening and empathy is effective for changing your opponents’ mind. Telling people that they’re stupid and wrong will never work to change their minds. And like half the voters are willing to vote for this maniac, even some of his voters who know he’s a maniac. Do you get that? That there are more than one type of person that votes for Trump? It’s no different than how I fucking hate Biden as a candidate but he’s still the person/party that would get my vote because he’s closer to what I think is right and good for the country.
The second reason to listen closer to Trumpers is that you might find that there are reasons they have that perhaps we could concede or compromise on with them, because maybe the country isn’t ready for that kind of progressiveness yet. Like go hang out with some garbage men or some blue collar people or just like someone who chose not to go to college because they didn’t have the money, or someone who lives in bad neighborhood and wants more cops around.
I really do believe that the left has been very influential and successful for many years and now we’ve just gone too fucking far and now the pendulum is swinging back and we have to absorb the back swing. But we don’t! We push back and they push back harder. If we dig our heels in on every issue and constantly just scream that the other side is wrong in every way and stupid for not knowing it, then we will just get more and more Trumps in office and more shitty judges in the Supreme Court.
And that’s far worse than trying to find a common ground with the right.
