Planned obsolescence and/or crappy built appliances.
I bought a refinished house with all new appliances 7 years ago. My dishwasher broke 2 years ago, last month my ice maker in my fridge stopped working. Now my oven keeps burning things and giving me an error.
It could be the oven sensor and/or the main control panel. Having someone fix it will cost close to a new one or I can buy the parts and hopefully fix it for a few hundred bucks.

    • I got the scoop from a appliance repair guy who was gradually going out of business:monNom
    • Some law says you have to have parts for 5 years. But everything is contract manufactured. They tool up for 10,000 units, then tool up for a new product.monNom
    • The factory that makes the parts essentially ceases to exist. So to ensure they have 'parts' for 5 years, they make single parts 80% of the cost of a new unit.monNom
    • Nobody buys the parts, manufacturer stays good with the law, and we get unfixable e-waste that must be replaced every 2-5 years.monNom
    • Our first appliances, bought 25 years ago, lasted for 18 or 20 years, now, with 3 or 4 years are already starting to failOBBTKN
    • My insanely expensive built in fridge has been going strong for two decades. No signs of any issues. Same with the Miele ovens.monospaced
    • Parts ordered, I'm going to try and fix it myself. If I never post again I died in a house fire caused by faulty installation.fooler
    • I cringe thinking of having to replace them with modern plastic garbage. I try to get stuff with less stuff to break. No computers etc.monospaced
    • Good luck!monospaced
