Does your spouse work and bring in decent income?
As I hit my 40s and start to have kids, I’ve noticed a bunch of new parents just stop working and stay at home. Mostly mons, one stay at home dad.
I feel like it would be impossible to live and raise kids on one income , but people with a similar job to me are doing it. Anyone in that situation? Are you just broke all the time? Or are you broke for a few years and then kids start costing less?
- Lol at kids costing less after a few yearssausages
- I've been a stay at home dad for 14 years w/ 2 kids. We're not broke but we're not big spenders. Kids cost more as they get older but their value depreceates.palimpsest
- Don't hold, sell now.palimpsest
- Kids cost WAY more as they grow. I would not recommend depending on a single salary until they stop studying.OBBTKN
- K thx. Good advice********
- both me and the misses work.. not sure we would able to get by with kids on one of our salaries :(dee-dubs
- I have a 3 and a 21 years old and the oldest is way more expensive (college).dmay
- depends on the 'hood. daycare in my NYC low-income 'hood is $800/month. in my wife's upstate town it's almost $2k.pr2
- lots of moms realize that family is WAY more important than careers (some dads too) so they decided to quite and stay at home.pr2
- (which as father of 5 and 7 year old, i highly agree with).pr2
- lots of people make crappy financial decisions, but bad financial decision may turn out positive if your kids get one of you 24/7 as a stay-at-home.pr2
- We both work, both have high energy jobs in fashion (corporate) and are super SUPER busy. We have a nanny, who we pay a LOT to but could not live withoutDaveO
- I really enjoy the fact that my wife is a crusher, and respect her so much. We have loads more to talk about other than the kids.DaveO
- Also the double salary is super necessary and means we can pay for travel, and bank lots of money per year.DaveO
- Some people really are not that attached to what they do, and given the choice between a job i hate or looking after my kids, I'd choose the latter every time!DaveO
- We both work and have similar income, but a good portion of it is accounted for between regular expenses and childcare. At least public school is “free”monospaced
- My youngest son is almost 2 and started preschool yesterday after having a full time nanny for a year. It is a lot less $. My other son is in kindergarten.monospaced
- The nanny was so expensive as it's paying someone's full salary, and not a terrible one.monospaced
- We wouldn't be able to do it without our nanny! She lives with us, and is a housekeeper as well, and also drives the kids to their activities etc... so luckyDaveO
- All of this said – it turns life into a financial arms race, which kinda sucksDaveO

- We both work, and the second kid is about to enter daycare. Its $5k a month of daycare for two, so out plans may have to changerobotinc
- we both work. both of us have good incomes. I have NO idea how you'd do it on one income. It's expensive as the kids get older. it's also expensive when they'reexador1
- young, (daycare etc). My oldest is in University and my youngest is about to start Uni...glad we saved for that...both their undergrads are paid for...exador1
