re: Pony
Had a similar situation a few weeks ago.
We've got a tiny utility room with storage racks, washer and dryer, waterheater, etc. It's probably 6x10, if that.
I was about to walk out the door with one of our dogs, and I heard a thump from the utility room. I'm thinking "Wait, didn't the missus have a meeting scheduled right now?". Roll my eyes and start to head back out, and I hear a POW.
So now I'm thinking "Jesus Christ, she probably just broke something" and head to the utility room. Open the door and the wall is on fire. Turns out our hand vac decided to commit suicide.
The there were several tiny lithium fires that were dangerously close to Monday morning's laundry that I stomped or swatted out. Then I turn around and the wall behind me is on fire, eating away the base of the water heater. So that explains the second pop. Google "LiPo fires" if you want to know how ridiculous these can be. Some cells will spew lithium lava, and others will violently explode.
At this point the gf is apprised of the fire, and is screaming "Should I call the cops?!"
Me, internally: "WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY GONNA DO, SHOOT THE FIRE!?"
Me, externally: "I need you to Google how many cells are in this battery pack, right now".
Her: Six!
Which meant I was absolutely fucked in a claustrophobic room with 4 more LiPo bombs ready to go off.
I found Cell Three, and while I was reaching for it, it blew up in my face. GF says it was one of the most horrifying things she's ever seen. I only saw orange, and had temporary hearing loss in my right ear for a few days.
Found Cell Four, and it blew up just as I got it outside the door. Dug out Cells Five and Six, put them on the stoop and doused them with water to try to set them off, but apparently they were never compromised.
It was fucking traumatic, and insane to think that because she was on headphones and in a meeting, if I left the house 30 seconds sooner, it's very likely that all I would have left is one of my dogs and my car.
- Good god, what a story. Happy everything turned out OK. Did you get any injuries from Cell 3's detonation?Continuity
- Just the temporary deafness, ruined my favorite shirt, and I had to trim the left side of my beard to match what was seared off the right cheek.garbage
- Thank fuck that I had a beanie on and my hair tied back, or I'd have a really weird haircut at the moment.garbage
- Holy Sh*t!! lucky timing... lucky you had that beard tooPonyBoy

- Shiet... I have the model.... Checking now just in case...pango
- The Pacha Mama from Salar de Uyuni has cast her spell on your vacuum cleaner.shapesalad
- All these cordless homeware tools, garden tools, made in China with low tier quality control are going to literally explode in the next few years.shapesalad
- not too sure. almost everything is made in china but I've never had anything exploded on me yet.pango
- @garbage. insurance?pango
- Jfc. I have drawers full of aging 18650s i should probably addressscarabin
- Wait what?! So, if I understood correctly all my battery hand tools are bombs waiting to explode in case don't know what?oey_oey
- Shoot the fire, lol!kaiyohtee
- perhaps compensation from dyson.pango
- That is fucking nuts, I'm glad you're okay. It makes me want to bin the Dyson which I hate anyway. Can't even vacuum a whole car before it goes flat.BuddhaHat
- @pangs It was a replacement battery from China, lol. The original battery doesn't have a very long life, and the gf ordered a Chinese knockoff.garbage
- But yeah, any LiPo you have could possibly rupture. If you have a phone where you can access the battery, take it out and spin it on a flat surface.garbage
- If it spins, you have a firecracker with a long fuse right next to your junk.garbage
- I'm assuming what happened here was the room got really humid. It's also next to the shower, and the washing machine is rumbling.garbage
- All it takes is a little bit of moisture and one compromised cell will go off, and trigger a chain reaction. I side-eye my DeWalts now.garbage
- glad everything is ok GarbageNutter

- Have a similar Dyson. Utter shite. Battery goes flat after 1 min of use. Need to replug in again for a second then it'll run for another 20 seconds...microkorg
- then plug it in again for 1s for another 20s. until eventually just goes flat.
Charges in a cupboard. Maybe should just charge under supervision.microkorg - mine is doing fine so far. gets about 20 min run time at normal speed.pango
- We just replaced our Dyson vacs with Bosch versions. Battery lasts about 35 mins if you run it on high which is mind blowing compared to the Dyson. Was $200 tooslappy
- It was about 20 min here. The other day I spilled some bread crumbs and was like "oh where's the.. nvm, it exploded" lolgarbage
- We got a Shark hoover. Plug type not battery. Absolute SHITE. No suction! Advertising said 'no hair tangle technology'...microkorg
- ...The thing tangles more hair than any other vaccum I've ever owned.microkorg
- Really? We have the Shark robot, and that thing is a beast. My only complaint it's supposed to have AI mapping..garbage
- ..which I guess means it knows how to make a beeline for me, wherever I am, at all times.garbage
