    ok so legit hardware question

my 2013 MBP is dying to the point where i can use it but can't always rely on it to not die when it is in sleep mode. it's been 10 years and has served me well.

now i don't use laptops the way i used to - i don't work 50 hour weeks on design anymore, but i do personal projects (books primarily, also web / photo work) that require some power. i primarily use the affinity suite for this.

i also do sound art, but most production is in audacity, which is fairly lightweight as well.

so this all being said - what would the votes be for a new laptop investment between the new 15" air against a new MBP? there is a $1000 difference between what i would spec out each as, so i am leaning towards the air.

    • An Apple Silicon Air with full RAM will run circles around what you've got now, with less heat and better battery life. It's feasible for sure.evilpeacock
    • In our studio we use M1 Macbook Pros for the designers and M1 Macbook Airs for the account managers. Although they should be similar performance on paper..slappy
    • Airs struggle with some of the design files (heat management?). Also with both, the RAM is the weakest link, I would get 32gb+ as that still bonks out sometimesslappy
    • @slappy, that's what i've heard the main difference is - the fan / heat mgmt in the pro. i'm not worried about it now, but long term could be a factorcolin_s
    • A Pro is a safer longterm investment, and yes get as much RAM as you can; AS still only needs 1/2 what Intel does.evilpeacock
