because most "fear of gays" americans thinkn that being gay is taught and not simply what you are. There is fear that this will inspire the youth to go fruit loop, plus the government does not want to offer the same tax benefits that married people have to gay people.
The excuse is marriage is sacred ...yeah getting married while drunk in Las Vegas by a fat Elvis that is 100% legal is more sacred.
