  i don't mind the fishy too much, however this is what i think:

  new typeface/logo
  new color palette
  no sponsors

  live'n it up a bit! i get that you're trying to have that "adolescent" feel, and yes, one can pull it off without having the "unprofessional" feel. believe me, alot more people than you think are advocates for simple sites without alot of extraneous graphics etc, currently the site doesn't look like a place designers would like to go. Granted, if the content is outrageously good, most people would probably get over it, but you'd recieve alot of shit.

  honesty is the best policy.
