there's tons of places to mountain bike in socal. the los angeles area has to be one of the most versatile areas there is. within a 1 1/2 hour driving radius, you have snow, forrests, desert, ocean, foothills, mountains, and in a little over 2 hours you have Mexico. mexico is poor, yes, but it has amazing beaches and really cheap stuff. i love to go camping in the joshua tree area in the desert. i'm a big fan of the desert. but sometimes when i want a greener atmosphere, i drive for an hour and a half and go to santa barbara. one time i drove to red rock canyon and camped. heres a picture i found. it was much dryer the time of year i went...
look at those trails. those would be fun to bike.
so yeah, southern california has it all. the biggest problem is the traffic and the smog, but you can avoid a lot of the smog if you live near the beach.
