NorCal has trees, SoCal does not.
Both areas do have hills though. And both areas have big mountains not far away.
If you like beaches - both are cool. But you can't swim on NorCal beaches. Well... you can - but you'd have to be somewhat crazy.
SoCal has nice - but crowded - beaches. Especially in San Diego.
