What if Putin's true intention is to create a "Russian world" separate from the Western world? If you listen to what he and the people around him seem to believe it's a very reactionary, pre-modern vision of the world. Something along the lines of Nick Land's "Dark Enlightenment" which laid the groundwork for the alt-right movement.
In other words a total break with the West might actually be what Putin wants even if it leaves Russians to a grim economic future. Just ignore the rest of the world and slowly escalate the violence until he has taken Ukraine. If anyone tries to interfere, threaten to use nuclear weapons as they already have.
Ukraine and Belarus fall completely under Russian influence and it's now a great power again even if it has to endure a decade of sanctions. Along with other resources Ukraine is the major food producer of the region so this is not an insignificant gain for Russia and loss for Europe.

- I realized this on the 2nd day of the war. However, for this to work, you have to have staying power. The collapse of the ruble will make it tricky.cherub

- Yeah there are definitely holes in this theory such as the difficulty of occupying Ukraine. However the idea has been there in Russia for some time, yuekit

- That's not a "what if", he wants to reclaim all of the former USSR and then some. He's been on about this for 20+ years.garbage
- If he manages to take Ukraine, Putin will face further sanctions, NATO is hitting the gym, and there will undoubtedly be insurrectionist cells that will bloom..garbage
- ..in Ukraine and back home, and the west will find and fund them. In the end, his only "win" is nuking the world.garbage
- What's amazing is that this movement existed 100 years ago
