I'm getting new kitchen appliances. Sister is strongly urging induction cooktop, she says it's great. Partner's bestie says induction is shit, she's had 2 break and went back to gas under warranty replacement.
What have you currently got? What would you get if you were getting a new one?
- id go with induction.pango
- get a good brand. some chefs I know are converts. gotta get used to them though.inteliboy
- they tend to cost a bit more cuz the market's not saturated with them yet.pango
- induction, don't miss cooking with gas and haven't lost a tea towel in flames for years. cons: doesn't work with stonewear, aluminium & round bottom wokskingsteven
- Pro: faster and accurate heat. energy efficient. easier clean up. safer. cooler kitchen.pango
- Con: cookware needs to be compatible. lighter cookware makes humming noise. it heats up really fast, needs to get use to timing.pango
- most of my pots and pans are cast-rion or carbon steel.
i do have portable gas stove, just in case power goes out.pango - Pro: you get to start every evening by saying ‘NOW we’re cooking with gas!” Game set match********
- I want to go induction because of the cleanup, but i love me some fire when cookingscarabin

- You've not lived if you not eaten food from gas. I'm sure that's how it went.MrT
- Other than feel, compatibility and electronic reliance and cost of hardware. There's no downside to induction.pango

- ummm it's kinda hard breaking an induction oven... caveman? I've been on induction for years to the point where I can't go back to slow...ArchitectofFate
- ...time consuming cooking, but you do have to replace all your old pans n shit – totally worth it.ArchitectofFate
- the bestie had them break in the main power circuit board, not on the surface or on the controls... replacement cost of the boards was pretty high too.BuddhaHat
- lol thanks pango that seems like a reasonable list of downsides, but I'm gonna have a look at some nice units on the weekend I thinkBuddhaHat
- Most new cookware is compatible with induction these days. We have a big induction surface and alongside a single large gas hob.microkorg
- My wife does a lot of Wok cooking so big gas with a good base for wok to sit on was a must. It really handy to have both.microkorg
- likely glass breaks are down to misuse. you have to remember, it's glass!microkorg
- if induction, get one with physical real buttons. if you get water/grease on fingers good luck trying to turn off heat with those touch sensitive buttons.shapesalad
- and the slightest water spill and it's beeping like crazy at you.shapesalad
- ya wok is tricky. To get the benefit of wok you have to use big fire. most average home gas stove just don't out put enough fire. and round bottom means it canpango
- only be used with gas stove.pango
- +1 what shape said.pango
- Gas. It's easy to use, to clean and I can even cook when there is no electricity.Longcopylover
- What kind of communist country are you in that lack of electricity prevents you from cooking?palimpsest
- Campfire. It's easy to use, needs no cleaning (pee on it), no electricity and it's hella fun.palimpsest
- We all cook better when we're coking with gas https://www.youtube.…skwiotsmith
- Fitting any sort of plumbed in gas appliances in 2022 is risky tbh. Prices went up 50% here in 6 months. Heating with gas Vs electricity still a no brianerkingsteven
- but cooking it's the opposite, induction uses far less energy... could see hydrogen mix roll out in the next decade here and need to replace it all anywaykingsteven
- I really do not like my flat bottom induction wok thokingsteven
- I've cooked almost exclusively with gas my whole life, but my experience with new induction has been very positive. They get much hotter than I expected!monospaced
- induction: burned pinky, forgot about aluminium once burned a nice arc into it, after some time gave up on making it clean as clean glass.********
- I used an amazing induction at NY and it totally changed my opinion of them. Just make sure you get the appropriate cookware for them.Nairn
- i remember when we reno'd our kitchen a while back... this sales guy trying to pitch us on Induction ...exador1
- boils water in 'x' seconds! cooks your eggs in 'x' minutes, etc..exador1
- i remember my wife just leaning over and whispering to me 'who gives a fuck?'exador1
- we went with a gas top. works and looks just fine. just don't get the whole Induction thing...exador1
- I just put a rump roast in my crock pot. On high. Should be done by 6 tonight.stoplying
