I was on Reddit reading a big thread on r/cars about Ferrari and Lambo wanting exceptions for themselves and other niche brands when the EU bans gas powered car production.

The thread evolved into comments about how low volume sports cars should be exempt, how so and so's vintage car won't make a difference to emissions since everything else is electric, how "I'll never give up my V8", and on and on.

Ok, I'm fine with all of that. But, nowhere in the 1000 post thread did I read how the hell they plan on getting fuel for these things. Gas stations aren't going to keep pumps running for the 0.01% of cars on the road that still use gas. The store at a gas station is the main money maker anyways. They don't make shit selling fuel (in the US, anyways).

Plus, I highly doubt local government is going to let you keep a couple hundred gallons in a tank in your back yard. So, yeah, that's great you finally got a 911 turbo, but how are you gonna drive it?

    • Small planes and off-site works vehicles will still be using petrol for a while yet. Also, I imagine rich people could afford atmosphere-derived liquid fuels...Nairn
    • ..which will probably become a thing, even if the finance and energy economics aren't exactly wonderful.Nairn
    • Apparently someof the call for exemptions tehre is so that Italy can continue to build 'the bulk' of these things there without becoming utterly reliant...Nairn
    • ..on foreign supply chains. German or Chinese batteries or electic motors or whatever will reduce the cachet of these vehiclesNairn
    • This is all true. Gas stations will slowly convert to charging stations, and then there will be only the rare fuel for old cars and lawn mowers, etc.monospaced
    • Frankly, given the improvements in tech, I think it'll only be oldies, enthusiasts and loud cunts that will prefer ICE vehicles in a couple of decades anyway.Nairn
    • yes, that would be the natural result when ICE vehicles aren't produced for a decade anywaymonospaced
    • easy... dig an oil well. Or collectively band together to keep a pump going with a mail order deliver service for those living far away.shapesalad
    • Or.. put an electric engine inside, and a big speaker rigged to play recordings of the former engine in it.shapesalad
    • "But I want my Lambo the way I like it" fucking whinersnb
    • There are plenty of cars that aren't street legal. This will be the same. You can own one, put your gas in it, drive around your farm. But not on the streetsnb
    • I am very curious how many actual ferrari and lambo owners are POSTING ON REDDIT lolnb
    • Ha!
I also posted about this issue, very funny

    • On road vehicles only counts for 35% of Oil usage.Morning_star
    • @nb they're whining about quashed dreams. I imagine any enthusiast with the means can just get a few rows of gas caddies and keep them in the garage.garbage
    • @nairn's first post. Work vehicles are primarly diesel, and jet fuel isn't gonna work in a car without heavy modifications. Neither of those will run an M3.section_014
    • Yeah, you're right, but they share the same production pipeline, so to speak.Nairn
    • eventually we'll have a proper propulsion unit - the hydrogen fuel cell (then fusion ofc). battery cars are shitty old tech holding the fort until thenhans_glib
    • battery cars are driving the future and huge efforts being put into charging networksmonospaced
