This is interesting, and probably answers a question I've had about how on Earth a cricket club somewhat local to my house is able to afford/hold on to a large green field right in the centre of one of the more valuable parts of North London.

    https://www.theguardian.com/poli…

" Enfield [...] council receives just £13,500 from Enfield golf club each year to rent its 39-hectare golf course"

    • Whoops - gist of article is 'London's Golf Courses could house 300k people'Nairn
    • I get the point but they should be looking at how to get more, and more diverse, people using the courses, rather than building on them.Fax_Benson
    • It's a healthy pastime on green space in a polluted city. London's empty houses must be able to house a big chunk of that 300k.Fax_Benson
    • Oh, I don't mean to pave over them all - but when you read the usage comparison in the article of 26k people vs 314 for the same amount of space.. well.Nairn
    • I grew up in a golfing family, so have some appreciation of it, but after 20 years here, I'm still surprised when I see someone around with a golf bag...Nairn
    • ..it's like "how far are you going to have to travel for a game?" well, apparently not very far at all.Nairn
    • yeah, it's an issue and should be looked at. I'd rather make the game more accessible and claw back brownfield from even richer fuckers.Fax_Benson
    • as an ex-golfer I can see that the idea has some appeal, given lots of golfers are twats.Fax_Benson
    • Fuckit, this has made me want to go up to the Pitch & Putt in AllyPally this weekend, haha. That's about my level these days - not that I was ever much good...Nairn
    • the driving range at Greenwich is quite good if you just want to whack some balls - https://greenwichpen…Fax_Benson
    • Ooh, thanks for the tip! AllyPally's a drunken stagger away for the weekend though.. :)Nairn
    • ugh, typical of the guardian urbanistas, "let's pave over all the green spaces". so short sighted.hans_glib
    • It makes the point of using it as parkland too, but I'm not sure a golf course counts as something to get all uptight about, given how few use themNairn
    • They also tend to be barren deserts, so aesthetically green but not environmentally green spaces.Nairn

    • if you don't like golf and you're walking on a golf course, you're asking for disappointment.Fax_Benson
    • and the spittling rage of middle-aged white guys screaming FFFORE! FUCKING FORE!Nairn
    • Also, links courses and posh over-engineered Spanish courses can be quite nice to walk around... .Valderrama's quite pretty :)Nairn
