Spent the most of the last couple of years completely off the rails, drinking like a fish, eating ridiculous amounts of junk food. Hit my all time high weight of 280lbs in March then suddenly just started shedding without even trying (60lbs in less than 6 months). Eventually I decided I should probably talk to doctor.

I got some blood work done, and I had an A1c of 12.8, fasting BS 350+. Cholestorol and triglycerides through the roof. I was diagnosed with the diabeetus. Call me Wilford Fucking McBrimley.

Anyway, I cut out all beer and sugary shit, started buying and making desserts and snacks using erythritol, and only eat whole grains. My eA1c is now at a 5.9 (<7 is considered "controlled"). My next checkup for official results is in a couple of weeks.

The first couple of weeks after diagnosis I was honestly devastated, but I've come to realize this was probably one of the best things that could have happened to me to get my fucking act together. I haven't felt this good in years.

    • I'm sorry to hear that you have been through so much in recent years. But I'm happy to hear that you are making a strong come back...stay strong, stay well.utopian
    • Nice work. Had a similar experience of dropping weight suddenly and was initially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. After 4 years of trying to manage it with medsmort_
    • And diet, it turned out to be type 1. Now on a regimen of insulin and it’s under control.mort_
    • Apparently misdiagnosis is common for adult onset type 1 diabetes. Something to be aware of.mort_
    • And unexplained weight loss is a common type 1 symptom.mort_
    • Oh wow. Thankfully no insulin for me, just a general "get yo shit together". It's nuts how many little ailments can be attributed to diabetes though,5timuli
    • it explains a lot. And thanks, utopian, you too :)5timuli

    • Type 2's commonly treatable with a low calorie diet these days. I think you may have to be wary about fake sugars though, as they still provoke anNairn
    • ..anticipatory response - your tongue senses sweet, and your body preps for that. If it were me, I'd just knock of sweet shit as much as possible for a while.Nairn
    • It's been fine for me, erythritol doesn't cause a spike in my blood sugar like some of the other sweeteners. Same with monkfruit.5timuli
    • I've been trying to get healthy whole grains every meal, and adding beans daily as they're great for processing glucose and lowering cholestorol.5timuli
    • So many people get this news and do nothing to change their lives. Good for you that you're doing the right thing. Stick with it!stoplying
    • Low-carb and exercise are the best for lowering blood glucose. Carbs are in a surprising amount of foods, not just pasta and potatoes.mort_
    • An invaluable book for figuring how many carbs are on your plate.
