Why is legalising cannabis a big progressive move these days while at the same time we've been tightening restrictions on tobacco and smoking for years?

I understand the potential medicinal properties of cannabis but surely smoking it adds a bunch of negative health consequences – these are always discussed for tobacco but I rarely see enter the arguments on cannabis.

    • Tobacco's necessarily and inherently physiologically-addi... Cannabis is not. Both should be on sale and taxed accordingly.Nairn
    • Personally, I think there should be a distinction between a raw product (tobacco leaf) and a fabricated product (a cigarette). As too other legal drugs.Nairn
    • If the UK legalised Cannabis, it would make a huge amount in taxes. So, if tobacco and booze are on sale - why not cannabis?Nairn
    • Also, when legalised, as the markets have shown in America, it leads to safer forms of consumption. Edibles and vapes/etc aren't easy to come by here.Nairn
    • Are there studies on the health effects of smoking cannabis? Does it cause lung cancer etc? I genuinely don't know. Just interested.BaskerviIle
    • Less so than tobacco - perhaps only because you need only smoke less. Any inhaled combusted material is going to fuck lungs up, regardless.Nairn
    • Agree that safer forms make sense. Just feels like smoking is the primary form for now. And it flies in the face of progress with tobacco lawsBaskerviIle
    • I'm old-school, so smoke leaf/hash, but honestly - the US-led vape/etc thing's really becoming A Thing here. I know of a few converts.Nairn
    • ^ those US vapes are good, I smuggle them down into Mexico, the entire country of MX is legalizing in spring, no more smuggling soonGuyFawkes
    • I’m sure if one smoked as much pot as a smoker does cigarettes then risk of lung cancer would be similarGnash
    • Drugs, cigs, everything should be freely available. And health care should be free. However we should have ID cards, and which each purchase of drugs/cigs, yourshapesalad
    • healthcare budget is reduced... So if you want to drink and smoke yourself into a cancerous mess, so be it, but don't expect state to pick up tab. Welcome to geshapesalad
    • get 3rd party private medical care.shapesalad
    • If only there were a way to make smokers pay for their supposed increased healthcare costs over the span of their shorter lives.Nairn
    • There are still WAY more restrictions on cannabis than tobacco and no one proposes banning any use of tobacco.CyBrainX
    • Risk of lung cancer with joints likely higher as there's no filter just a roach ;)microkorg
    • But in places where its now legal arent people moving away from smoking it, choosing to vape or buy jelly/choc etc?microkorg
    • I saw some talk mid last year about UK Gov legalising weed etc to help pay for Covid debt.microkorg
