Was talking with a friend who has has a cafe/restaurant with two outlets up in the North East of England - it's quite successful, but all the same he was bemoaning the state of the Government's Covid response, but perhaps not for the reasons you might expect.
"It's crazy - we've had our best ever year, due to Covid. We have two leaseholds, which we got a string-free £10k grant each from, then 80% furlough wages, then some other monies, and a £50k loan at 2.5% that doesn't need to be paid back for years. We were able to stay open a lot anyway, also for takeout across the threshold. Why?".
He was adamant that the governemnt should have instead just let hospitality die on its feet. "It's the one industry that will necessarily bounce back afterwards. They should have just looked after the workers".
I'm paraphrasing, obviously (I don't have perfect recall) but that was th gist of it. He's fairly well off - he relaly doesn't need a lot of the help he's gotten.
Can't wait to see how The Great PayBack or, more likely, great Liquidity Easing will pan out. Yaay.
I should've asked for some of that cash. I'll be paying everyone else's back for the rest of my life anyway....
- I know a guy that said his business made over 1million a year and got a £50,000 payment. He deals weed and barely makes minimum wagePhanLo
- Sorry, I missed a main point of hisw, which was soemthing I thought would happen way back when "they should have just frozen rents".Nairn
- @phanlo. fuck's sake. 'Good for him' I guess - but shit like that makes my blood boil. I'm the idiot here though, I chose not to get money 'cos I was working.Nairn
- Interesting. There were lots of calls for furlough, grants and rate relief to be properly targeted but after the first round.Fax_Benson
- not sure the gvmnt themselves thought they'd be able to do an audit on that scale properlyFax_Benson
- Yeah Nairn, it’s bananas, with £50,000 I’d pay the last bit of mortgage and have loads left over. He’s just kept it in a separate accountPhanLo
- Imagine what people who are really in the know managed to rob.PhanLo
- he will pay it back come tax return / accounts time unless he's a tax dodger. As if the tories aren't going to claw it back in any way possible.fadein11
