Just got offered a web job that turned out to be building a site in Avada (like Squarespace for Wordpress). By way of trying to politely turn it down I tried to explain why that would take me longer than coding it from scratch - yet they are still willing to pay my full rate for clicking buttons on a UI?? Sounds like hell and I'm going to tell them to fuck off but am I missing something? Where the fuck are the design graduates in 2020?

    • Wordpress editors can become a total PAIN. I've worked on a ton of WP sites using Avada... I feel your painOBBTKN
    • And yes, after using other constructors too, I share your opinion, I prefer to work from scratch. Hacking those editor/themes can be really stressfull...OBBTKN
    • And... TIME CONSUMING, I've lost lots of hours trying to get working v. simple sites made with them. Argh!OBBTKN
    • ^ I created a UI customisable theme for WP about 14 years ago before all this existed (it was rolled out in schools to teach kids web publishing)... and now :-|kingsteven
    • avada is a bear, built two with it. visual composer i believe. honestly elementor is quick and just had an update if you're willing to work within a framework.imbecile
    • ^ designer actually sent me through the wireframe and everything is do-able out of the box with avada. no idea why they didn't just build it straight up!kingsteven
    • i stopped using wp 3-4 years ago. it's a shit show. also did take care of one site in avada recently, very heavy on the bandwidth the whole thing.renderedred
    • ^ most of my long-term clients are folks that got sick of WP once you get a 'real' website it's hard to go back.kingsteven
    • I quietly let a job 'opportunity' like that go pre-lockdown. Can't recall what WPGUI framework it was, but I honestly couldn't see the advantage over coding rawNairn
    • not to fanboy, there are plenty of "real" websites running wordpress including several national news outlets. it's about the configuration / hosting imoimbecile
    • ^ yep i manage a couple of WP sites for online publications but for small sites or specialist stuff (large festivals, elearning) admin can be hellish.kingsteven
    • indeed. wordpress can be overkill for many projects.imbecile
    • Most of my work is hand coded with WP as a CMS. I haven't come across a better CMS for clients. Any suggestions are welcomed.ArmandoEstrada
    • Ive used Elementor twice and it was pretty good for what it is.ArmandoEstrada
    • btw same as mentioned before, i prefer to code a custom cms built around client needs.renderedred
    • yep, i build bespoke for each client but it does limit the types of jobs i can take on. i know guys that pop out WP sites and ecommerce in 48 hours.kingsteven
    • and probably produce shit sites. I build out queries by hand. Looking at one now.ArmandoEstrada
