I am getting more into the synth part of life. I have no business making music, most everything is "experimental" to be kind. There should be no need for me to spend tens of thousands of dollars on some synth fun. (looking at you autoflavour)

I had a microKorg, then an Arturia Brute, sold them both years ago. There are a few Pocket Operators floating around here somewhere, but as far as any noise that isn't from the sample library, all I really have is a Behringer Model D. Thought I'd have a Neutron by now, but everytime I fire up the Model D, I've been entertained enough given my skill set...

Enter the K2, Pro-1, Cat, and Wasp, all by Behringer. Given Behringer also offers a three tier eurorack, one could own all six of these, then mount them to two euroracks fairly affordably.

    neat-o.

Cabin fever has me believing that all I lack is the proper sound inspiration and... wouldn't it look cool on the desk?

I'd buy used / refurbished where I could, so maybe $1,200 - $1,500 all in, but for now just pick up two more, probably the Neutron or Pro-1 and the K2 to fit into one of their euroracks. Then eventually the Pro-1 or Neutron, Cat, Wasp, and additional Eurorack accordingly.

It seems that a Neutron, K2, and Pro-1 would be a great setup in itself, but given I already have the Model D, I feel motivated to go for the full set of six.

Anyone care to chime in on this line of thinking? Maybe someway for me to have lots of different things with a similar budget, like a real Eurorack setup? Maybe I'm an idiot?

I see the small eurorack items littered across the internet, but support and the learning curve on bespoke units like that is a tough sell for me. I'm a fan of turning it on and it works along with other people using it as inspiration / guidance being easy to access.

Don't get me wrong, a $1000 collection of $50 - $200 modules sounds fun, but can't I get the ~same fun with these Behringer units?

Additionally, and most importantly, to my understanding, once these are all racked up and arranged, I can cable them to each other using the various ins/outs to each other like I already do on the Model D, they can all be wired together in some sort of cacophony, correct? The more units, the more unlimited the options?

Eventually, I'd like to begin a filter collection, but that's a talk for another year.

    • Nice idea man. I've got the Neutron and it's decent. Although it's been sat in its box for over 6 months unused because i keep fucking about in Ableton :-(Ianbolton
    • The behringer stuff kinda rocks and gets great reviews. $1000 isn't going ot get you much of a Eurorack setup. Think the closest you'd get to a 'setup' would...microkorg
    • be an Erica Synths Pico System.microkorg
    • hey, you can look at me all you want.. I have been collecting this shit since 1996 and have turned this studio over at least 6 times the processautoflavour
    • whenever I sell something in the studio, it goes back into the studio.. and of course I buy new shit.. but hey, some people buy cars, I buy synthsautoflavour
    • in answer to your question, sure they look cool, but what do they sound like.. is that what you are looking for in a sound? are they one trick ponies orautoflavour
    • do they have depth and flexibility. I would way sooner suggest you look at a second hand Elektron Analog 4 than any behringer offerings.. or Roland boutiquesautoflavour
    • look, dont get me wrong, they are based on classics (mostly) but they are definitely limited in their scope and sound. find a second hand Virus or somethingautoflavour
    • also dont even get me started on behringer quality control.. its gotten better recently, but fuck me they are shit sometimes.. its literally make a bunch ofautoflavour
    • stuff a quick and cheap as possible, if a unit fails, its just cheap enough to replace again and again. its the fast fashion of synthsautoflavour
    • /rantautoflavour
    • literally why i asked / named you as i presumed you to be one of the most informed. you're right, i spend much more on cars, music is an occasional hobby for meimbecile
    • i don't use the model d enough to know if it has proper build quality, it works whenever i get out the box. I'll look at the units you listed. thanks againimbecile
    • Depends on the sound your after.. analog4 or a digitone are a good startautoflavour
