I'm a bit weirded out about Keith Lemon's (whatever his real name is) crying with regret for playing black people, and apparently iPlayer and Netflix removing Little Britain from their services for the same. Frankly, I'm in agreement with the latter, but purely because I always hated Little Britain.

What I don't get is - what's wrong with a white person playing a black person, especially in comedy? I mean - having a white person what should be a black (or any other ethnicity) role in a film or theatre production or whatever's a bit.. well, daft, but if someone wants to make up a character - why not?

If they're joking about the person and not the race, as Keith Lemon (whatever) seems to have done - then so what? I was never a great fan, but I don't recall it ever being about racist stereotypes, but his targets' general -ness.

I've mentioned on here before that - whilst I've not seen the movie it's from (I need to) - one of my favourite memes is the gif of Key & Peele's White Chicks hyper-duck facing. Clearly they're mocking a certain character-type (spoilt valley/daddy's girl), one that is predominantly white - but so what? Fucking cracks me up.

Honestly, I think it's ultimately more divisive to create these barriers (as I see them). I want to see more non-polarised appreciation of personas from comedians, from all sides, not less of it.

    • This is low on the pile of shit happening right now, I understand, haha.
Just the reflexive direction things have taken seems.. worrying.

    • When it’s done like Jimmy Fallon did Chris Fock and your lampooning a specific person it might be ok, but it’s when it’s an over the top stereotype_niko
    • erm, keith lemon isn't on little britain is he?hans_glib
    • Of a race like al Holden or when done because you don’t want to use an actual actor from that race like all the yellow face that was done that’s a problem_niko
    • *jolson not Holden_niko
    • Although even Jolson has a complicated legacy, he’s vilified now but at the time he was celebrated in black circles, with him being Jewish and bringing the suff_niko
    • Suffering of the two peoples together and opening the doors for actual black entertainers, many of whom were his close friends._niko
    • No, hans - 'Leigh Francis' had some histrionic breakdown last week and today Little Britain was removed from those services.Nairn
    • So what's a double act supposed to do when it wants to refer to a person outwith their race? Call in an [insert race] actor? It's ridiculous.Nairn
    • if the humour's racist at its core, it doesn't matter whether the participants are blacking up.Nairn
    • Don't worry, at the rate things are going no one will remember any of this a month from now.yuekit

    • I want to see an asian actor play a black actor playing a white actress.

And one of them is an owl.

    • The only time I wasn't offended was Tropic Thunder. Watching white people imitate what they think black is, is nauseating to me.shellie
    • Tropic Thunder was basically pointing out the fact that it's fucked up that hollywood does that. Along with so many other issues they touched. Its a fine lineshellie
    • and easily overstepped. In general, I DO NOT want my blackness to be a costume. Same for Geisha, Native American or other ethnic costume. Its disrespectful.shellie
    • On top of that, black and ethnic actors are not given as many opportunities. White characters in american entertainment are still by in large the majority.shellie
    • Let the ethnic actors play the parts that are written to be a specific ethnicity. Can they at least have THAT opportunity?? Like, damn. Btw, I know many workingshellie
    • actors in Los Angeles. I work in entertainment. I've seen this first hand. There's so many levels of yuck on the whole issue.shellie
    • "DO NOT want my blackness to be a costume" this is the type of statement that is going to make more people racist in my opinion.Hayzilla
    • Curious. from what I know, Japanese seem to be more than happy for non-Japanese to engage in Geisha - what right do you have to gatekeep other cultures?Nairn
    • I totally get the point made in Tropic Thunder. It's a good one, mentioned in my post here. However, that's not what I was directing at.Nairn
    • What I mean is - if you have an act where they cover all bases, with respect and appreciation - what point is there in getting hysterical about thingsNairn
    • .when that treads over their own race? Can they then not 'do' women? People from different regions? People of different heights?Nairn
    • If it's not racist, it's not racist. If it is, it is.
Doesn't matter what the 'costume', as you put it, is. Do things with respect and we can all have a laugh.
