California has had fewer deaths in total than New York has each day still.

    • Breathing a masked sigh of relief in California.shellie
    • California is spread out and people live in houses and low apartment buildings; in NY people live in tall buildings in densely populated areas.Krassy
    • It could be that California got a milder strain of the virus. Washington, my state, was the first to get hit and had nowhere near the deaths of New York.yuekit
    • there's also a theory that CA has developed greater levels of herd immunityKrassy
    • New York is a hub for travel from Europe so that may have been a key factor. Also far more dense as you mentioned.yuekit
    • It could be that all these minor differences in demographics, density, climate have a big multiplier effect.yuekit
    • Kind of like if you try to start a fire in the rain it will fizzle out...but start one in the heat and it can burn a whole forest down.yuekit
    • Hold on! I’m not asking as to WHY. I’m not confused. This is a commentary on reactions to the crisis and differently levels of fear.monospaced
    • We all know why they are higher in New York. Countless obvious reasons. It’s just an observation because I have immediate family in California.monospaced
    • Also Krassy, most of New York is spread out more than California. You’re thinking of nyc and that isn’t the whole state. Just sayin.monospaced
    • I feel that there is a slight overreaction in certain California counties when all things are considered. That’s all.monospaced
    • @monospaced ah OK OK, we're all on the same page :)Krassy
    • lol mono.Fax_Benson
    • A couple other factors: a younger and healthier population, more access to the sun and generally warner climate.utopian
    • Also it never had a major outbreak to begin with. It saw what happened in NY and was able to respond.monospaced
    • Also, in LA county everyone is still wearing masks outside. On walks, running, on bikes. Masks are everywhere.FNP14
    • Which underscored my point. California is acting like the virus is rampant when in fact its probably pretty scarce.monospaced
    • It's all relative, many countries did weeks-long lockdowns with only a few thousand cases.yuekit
