Why is it considered the default to pour a huge amount of sugar into your coffee in so many cultures? Unhealthy and it doesn't really go together that well, just my opinion.

    • I find Americans obsession with franchise coffee even odder. Starbucks and the rest... rubbish.inteliboy
    • yes inteliboy, and driving / walking from here to there all the day with a massive cup / thermo of coffee...OBBTKN
    • Take a good espresso on a porcelain cup, and you're done for hoursOBBTKN
    • Here in PT we drink expresso, and many (as I) drink it without sugar.dmay
    • i'm guessing it's the original rocket fuel - a massive dose of caffeine mixed with a ton of sugar for energy. but you're right - disgustinghans_glib
    • the italians seem to leave the sugar out of their coffee and have some sickly sugary pastry with their coffee instead.hans_glib

    • Yeah but.. a teaspoon of sugar in a porcelain cup with tea and milk. My gran drank it every day... she had a full set of false teeth. Lived to 89 years old.shapesalad
    • most probably a hangover from industrilisation, coffee/tea=power, sugar=more power. also, with sugar you don't need high quality coffee/tea.uan
    • uan is on the money.
Coffee is an acquired taste, countries that don't have a big coffee culture and therefore low quality coffee compensate with sugar.

    • I think some North Americans skip breakfast and JUST drink a coffee; milk AND sugar are substitutes for REAL FOOD. The Canadian "4x4" for example...ideaist
    • ...4 milks and 4 sugars. Microwave it all morning and you can skip breakfast and not eat lunch until 2pm. That and some darts/smokes and you're good to go.ideaist
    • i'm eating salty cheese croissant and drinking a big ass latte coffee what is more like milk with sugar. compensates the salt that's all for me.sted
    • Switched to honey a few years back. Fucking delicious. Now I can't use sugar. It's way too sweet.IRNlun6
