Office people are sending me more and more .PNG files lately to print. Dunno why they're all shifting to PNG instead of the JPG they used to send before... PNG is not a good file format for printing.

    • why not?uan
    • it's losless, just more bites.uan
    • 'cos it's hard to work out what the intended resolution is - PNGs are screen res, and that's that. Reminds me: Need to add 'no PNGs please' to my site!Nairn
    • The rip of my large format printer sees PNG as 300"x500" file when they're actually 3x5" for example.Bennn
    • PNGs were invented for the web, not for print.Bennn
    • yeah because PNG can't store dpi info like jpg or tiff, also it's actually untagged RGB (sRGB) so good luck with the conversion.sted
    • Are they still embedding them in Word files?i_monk
    • Not even sure how rgb/cmyk translatesrobotron3k
    • open and save in ps. ps will count the pixels and write the resolution into file's metadata. use save as.. (save for web, export as will not write the metadata)uan
    • And what if they set up the size incorrectly in the first place? Sure, there are workarounds that can use guesswork, but why's that required in the first place?Nairn
    • haha, iMonkGnash

    • graphic design is dead.Al_dizzle
    • Benm, just turn the lights off. tell them to go home for the dayfuturefood
    • good grief... how the fuck are some of you in business w/the amount of misinformation delivered in these comments? :/PonyBoy
    • such as?Nairn
    • PonyBoy can you climb down from that fucking high horse and start making constructive comments?sted
    • You realise people send PNGs at THEIR screen res, which could be 72, 96, 144 or whatever ppi they're working to, with no concept of what that relates to?Nairn
    • and, perhaps, some of us work in different domains to each other, so our respective experiences vary?Nairn
    • I think he was referring to uan's comment :)sted
    • I doubt you regularly work in 600dpi. I do, all day, every day. Now, did naive client send their file at what resolution, relative to mine?Nairn
    • PNGs are shit for anything other than the purely digital and screen-based.Nairn
    • if it's saved via native save in an app like ps it can store the resolution bits, otherwise it's 72 by default.sted
    • https://www.w3.org/T…sted
    • First - if folks are sending you shit files... write back and explain what you need / why what they sent is garbage. SEcond - PNG's can be converted like...PonyBoy
    • .. any other 'raster' image. They most certainly can be 300dpi (or higher) and be converted / saved in whatever color profile you please.PonyBoy
    • If you're getting screen caps that are shit PNGs then you need to have a discussion w/your client... not QBN. <3PonyBoy
    • PNGs are FINE for whatever the fuck you want them to be... as long as they were saved in the resolution / profile you need. Again - lots of disinformation here.PonyBoy
    • *gallops away

      :)
      PonyBoy
    • PNGs have their on-screen purpose (as sted is showing you via that w3.org link)... you can manipulate the shit out of them w/script etc...PonyBoy
    • ... hex values hold up etc. they for sure are for screen. BUT—it also depends on the info saved in the file you've received. Any 'raster' can be converted...PonyBoy
    • ... it just comes down to the data you're beginning with. PNG, JPG, Tif etc... if you have a file w/a ton of data to work with you can convert to what you needPonyBoy
    • Again - hit up your client if it's 72dpi and 3" x 3"... if you got that file as a JPG or a TIF at the size you're just as fucked.PonyBoy
    • haha only thing your forgot is the compression. Png is similar to gif but ... what 8 bit for the alpha?... got the 8 which is shit and 24.. regardless good fordeathboy
    • transparency but not photos. jpg compression for photos with lots of pixel data. png a poor mans pdf/svg.deathboy
    • I've always avoided them like the plague but in the last year I've looked at two of my designers artwork recently...Hayzilla
    • ... and was alarmed by the amount of rgb photos and PNGs they use. Their finished product has always looked good though. I'm as confused as you.Hayzilla
    • I'm with PonyBoy on this one. Either make it work (ask what size the print is) or ask for different files. Also, "png a poor mans pdf/svg" is the stupidest shitmonospaced
    • Good God, do you really think neither of us have thought of that? All this time, and I could've just asked clients to resend files?!
      *slaps forehead*
      Nairn
    • Were you talking to me? LOL, yeah, you said that too. Calm down. :) Just agreeing.monospaced
    • Good god!!PonyBoy
