Religions are just social systems that help sustain a population.
It's very simple, yet hardly anyone is able to grasp it.
For a society to survive in the long term i.e. for many generations, every couple needs to have on average roughly 2.3 children.
This is exactly the one thing big dominant religions tell their disciples: breed. Form a stable family (hence the sanctity of marriage) and breed.
This is not happening now is it? It would mean a lot of people around you would have 3 or more, most would have at least 2. Less fortunate would have just one, sad weirdos would have none.
Reality is, most people around us have few children, many have none, most of them deliberately, and we are all getting bamboozled into thinking that the world is getting overcrowded and having children is bad for the planet. It's the opposite.
A culture in which having children is not a top priority will perish in a few generations. This is very simple math.
We drop religions (because we arguably get too smart to follow silly fables), and turn towards self fulfilment. We follow our dreams, pursue goals, but most importantly, we stop breeding. A society of people who value what basically is hedonism higher than reproducing is a society in steep decline.
Without a societal shift towards having more children, we're done.
So, this is what religions were designed for: to coerce us into breeding.
There always will be religions. People will always be drawn towards them, that's how our brains are wired, and for a good reason: belonging in a religion increases our evolutionary chances of long term survival.
As Elon Musk put it: the birth rate is strongly correlated to religion, and inversely correlated to education and wealth.
This is the tragedy of our species: the smarter and more comfortable we get, the lower our chances of long term survival.
- Don't worry, communism has all the answers.Morning_star
- Communism exploits the need for religion, substituting it with a totalitarian religion-like worship system.shaft
- were religions really invented in order to reverse falling birth rates 2000 years in the future? Even though there are a thousand other contributing factors?Fax_Benson
- I don't think they were "invented", they evolved this way. Civilisations that had focus on breeding had a winning evolutionary strategy, and here we are.shaft
- Not to forget the "convert them heathens" part. Winning religions were also expansive.shaft
- Overpopulation is the solution to long term survival.
Preach!deadsperm - Overpopulation is a dangerous myth. It's not happening.shaft
- People aren't even real. Wake up sheeple!deadsperm
- overpopulation on its own doesn't mean anything - isn't it scarcity of resources in relation to population that's the worry?Fax_Benson
- Nobody is really consuming anything because the population is a myth created by the illuminati. It's only about 30 humans producing a virtual reality.deadsperm
- Those 30 humans are being milked by 5 illuminati that use them as batteries.
This is very simple math.deadsperm - @Fax_Benson
Resources on their own don't mean anything unless we talk about our supposed reliability on them for survival.deadsperm - Even if humans were real they are under no imminent threat for extinction so those worried about overpopulation or underpopulation are both wrong.deadsperm
- Overpopulation is a myth? We're in danger of dying out? Hmmm OK...
https://i.imgur.com/…yuekit - Actually this one gives you a better idea:
https://i.imgur.com/…yuekit - There were less than a billion people in the entire world only 200 years ago. There were only 4 billion in 1975, now almost 8 billion.yuekit
- But dates don't really mean anything, isn't the passing of time that's the issue?
Time is itself a myth by the way.deadsperm - Australia doesn't exist, so that's 24.6 million less people right there.deadsperm
- About the religion thing, I think this is a little bit silly...the idea that humans need to go to church every week in order to be convinced to have kids.yuekit
- Like we need to be brainwashed into performing the basic functions of life?
We're biologically wired to want to have kids.yuekit - China is officially atheist and discourages religion and that didn't stop them from growing as a country.yuekit
- I think it has more to do with the overall economic situation people find themselves in. If you live in a poor country with no welfare system, having kids isyuekit
- almost a necessity, because who else will take care of you?yuekit
- So if anything you can blame having money, and the invention of birth control. Ban those things and I'm people will have a lot more kids :)yuekit
- The only reason we exist is to reproduce. All the other stuff is just things we've made up between pumping each other.PhanLo
- Religion seems to be good for stopping people shagging their own kids though. Often when they interview super religious people, they say things like...PhanLo
- 'If god doesn't exist, what's to stop me going around murdering people or raping my children?'. Maybe it is good for some things.PhanLo
- So, Budism is not a religion?
Religions served multiple purposes, mostly a way to reduce community greater goals to simple rules.
But not necessarily breed.sr_rosa - religion is p/good, but only for those funny church signs you get in united states of america********
- Fact is that poorer people have more kids, which is opposite of what you claim. Also the idea that people need 2.3 kids to sustain species isn’t true either.monospaced
- Religion isn’t the reason people have kids either. So really your whole thesis is bunk. Cute though.monospaced
- What part of "inversely correlated" do you not understand mono? Below, Musk says it and explains "the poorer you are, the more kids you have".shaft
- "We're biologically wired to want to have kids." —yuekit
Sure. How many do you have?shaft - "blame having money, and the invention of birth control. Ban those things and I'm people will have a lot more kids :)"
Exactly what the church discourages.shaft - Sinful: contraception, abortion, sodomy, jerking off. All the things that on a grand scale shrink the population. Where do you think those rules came from?shaft
- @shaft Religion encourages traditional values, and one of those is family. However there's a lot more to religion than just that.yuekit
- It's not like you go to church and they talk all day about the importance of having kids. Religion is supposed to be an all-encompassing system foryuekit
- understanding the world.yuekit
- However you can still understand the world without religion. And you can still want to have kids, without religion...obviously...yuekit
- shaft, I know all about correlations, but YOU wrote that “less fortunate would have one” which I interpreted as poor having fewer kids.monospaced
- Anyway. There is no foreseeable situation in any conceivable reality where our species dies off because we don’t make enough kids. Sorry.monospaced
