I hadn't really given much thought to the theory Trump is manipulating the markets for himself -- until today. Since Friday when China announced their tariffs, Trump announced his counter tariff after the close, then this morning before they opened he claimed China called and wants to open negotiations again and he thinks they're sincere (Dow jumps). Huge surprise now: an editor for a Chinese state run paper just said that didn't happen. If Trump just came out and lied to boost the market this morning, knowing that China isn't actually wanting to negotiate - what purpose does that serve? Even if he's just trying to save face and not crash the market then he would know that all it takes to counter his claim is for China to say, "What? That's a lie."
