i wanna rag on MMA for a bit.. hope you don't mind. it stems from this asshole i knew back in the day who hated me, and threatened me all the time, and was totally into fighting, and eventually became an MMA fighter. Coincidence? Anyway, calling it an art is as ridiculous to me as calling it a sport or even self-defense for that matter. i'm pretty sure when he was threatening me he wasn't asking me to play his sport, nor was he practicing self-defense, and he definitely wasn't making art. MMA just breeds people who want to kill each other - and without a ref in the ring - they actually would. Is this art? Is it beauty? I don't see it. And if a couple guys do this in a bar or on the street is it still art? a sport? beautiful? my point is this a stupid coverup for being an asshole under the hood - spreading violence by glorifying it. it's a disgusting activity and there is no art to it - it's simply wanting to rip the other person's head off. i say take the ref out out of the picture!

and the company 'Tapout' that makes the stupid t-shirts - did they even notice they were essentially calling their company 'Losing'.. b/c that is what tapping out is in MMA. so everytime i see one of those MMA thugs wearing that shit I can't help but laugh

    • when one guy taps out, the other one winsmonospaced
    • But c'mon, fighting techniques are learned, practiced, and eventually mastered, like any "art" is. And most any competition is a sport, by definition.monospaced
    • There's no connection that MMA causes more violence in the world, either. Just like there isn't for video games. If anything it's an outlet for some.monospaced
    • the art of killing someone with your bare hands?! whatever you say mono.. i don't agreebliznutty
    • Yes, that's not only an art, there are many many forms of it going back to the beginning of time. And they're all sports. You don't have to agree, but it's truemonospaced

    • Bliz > just because you've been involved in some form of bullying doesn't represent the entire world of martial arts. Most of these sports are based around...Ianbolton
    • years of discipline. Some of my friends who practice Jiu Jitsu and it's like their meditation. In most ways it allows people to CONTROL their aggressionIanbolton
    • Change your mind or carry on thinking all martial ARTS are bad, therefore having the wrong view on thousands of years of human developmentIanbolton

    • LOL MMA isn't art (fine art nor "the arts"). It's just a name. Other martial arts may have varying levels of art included in their discipline, hence the name.nb
    • I'm not making a blanket statement about all martial arts. MMA is sport, not art. Puhlease.nb
    • Just because you work hard at something, or are dedicated, or even inventive... it doesn't make it art. Everything isn't art.nb
    • yes it is thoughmonospaced
    • Martial crafts may be more appropriate than art, but it's semantics at the end of the day.fadein11
    • As someone who studied judo and aikido for 20 years and sees the beauty in the mindset behind them, I think MMA is a bastardization of the forms.ben_
    • It's cage fighting for the sake of gambling, nothing more than that. There are some really skilled fighters, but like the name suggests, it's not about...ben_
    • the philosophy of the form itself. I'll co-sign that the majority of people attracted to fighting in it are lunatics.ben_
    • The three worst students at my dojo, the ones that were out to hurt people constantly are now in it.ben_
    • and yeah, "tapout" shirts are fuuuuucking stupid.ben_
    • uh art is an abstract concept which ones chooses to label. one can label it many other things and its all in the eye of the beholderdeathboy
    • like questioning wether playing fortnite is art. just a bad question. it is what it is and whatever it is to others. you don't need to care about itdeathboy
    • unless you have vested interested in betting on how others may perceive it.deathboy
    • Except that "art" in the case of "martial arts" refers specifically to a skill acquired through practice. There's literally no martial art that is based upon...ben_
    • the definition you're talking about.ben_
    • haha ben what is playing a game everyday if not practice? Hell even trolling can be an art. dont be a meathead thinking your art is any different.deathboy
    • I'm not defending MMA or fighting as my "art", quite the opposite. I'm pointing out that there are different definitions of art, and that you are...ben_
    • confusing them into one. The abstract concept of "Art" is not the same as the pursuit of consistency and form "art"ben_
    • just because someone is proficient at something, like a "sandwich artist" for instance, doesn't make their output "Art".ben_
    • You, and the OP can debate what is "Art" all you want, but the definition of martial arts is rooted in the opposite of self expression.ben_
    • And just because I've studied two forms for years, that makes me a meathead? Interestingly close-minded theory from someone so enlightened.ben_
    • thank you ben!bliznutty
    • Im currently studying to be a sandwich artist in a bid to smack a load of the boys down the pub. Give them a good fillingIanbolton
