nb...people like Mitch McConnell are "heartless bastards who don't give a shit about others."
"Republicans" really do believe that Republican policies will help...them. If they're rich, the policies will help them. If they're poor, they believe that at least those policies are hurting [other people] more.
My friends who still call themselves Republicans after years of this shit show fall into two camps: The ones who still believe in certain tenets of "conservatism," meaning they're anti-choice or they feel like they pay too much in taxes, and the ones whose worldviews have been so warped by Fox News that they really believe that hordes of "illegals" are coming to take their jobs or rape their womenfolk, and that "elitists" are "weak" and "socialists" who would capitulate to Hitler.
Frequently, these two types dovetail. I have a friend who is a devoted Fox watcher, former Marine who hated the waste and stupidity he was surprised to find there, and white collar sales and manufacturing exec. He lives in a suburban, cloistered community that in 2009 was decimated by foreclosures (mainly execs like himself with big families who didn't live within their means). He isn't a racist, but he doesn't see or acknowledge his white privilege. He definitely feels that "they" (fill in the blank) don't work as hard as he does, and still gives credit to Republicans for being "fiscally conservative," even though there is no evidence that this credit is deserved.
This guy is a friend of mine, so believe me when I say that I say this with love: He's an idiot. He is so hardened in his beliefs that he would not abandon the GOP, no matter what. I know there are many conservatives who abandoned the GOP because of Trump, but they are 30 years late to the party. Those who are sticking with the GOP of Mitch McConnell are ignorant, I can't frame it in any kinder way.
Yes, they're nice people. They love their families, are good to their kids, pay their taxes. Fuck all of them for their ignorance.

- point is that all that doesn't mean that you're not an idiot too. That 'your' policies may not work either - at least not in the best interests of your friend.Fax_Benson
- I won't deny that I'm an idiot. But I believe that government policies should serve the people, not just the ruling class. Policies may have unintendedallthethings
- consequences, they may not work, but at a minimum they should be egalitarian. I mean, there's a reason why people form governments, and it's not to createallthethings
