    • My problem here is that I ask this trying to ascertain whether client can afford it, or how low I can go depending upon desperation, whilst clients...Nairn
    • ...presumably assume that I'm trying to work out how much I can wring from them. Given I always fall on the side of not over-charging, this is frustrating.Nairn
    • Reason #3641 that I'm poor...Nairn
    • Client budget is not my business.. I give them a price and they decide wether they can afford that or not. Ain't gonna negotiate when the offer is 10x theirsmekk
    • So their budget most certainly is your business then, mekk, if you need to know not to negotiate...set
    • in my experience asking what's their budget is, works only in some cases, ppl usually get confused when given the freedom, unless it's a bigger business.renderedred
    • Depends if and how well it's been scoped already.Mattjanz3n
    • why does this work on house builds and renovations?_niko
    • lol I had this conversation recentlysarahfailin
    • my price does not change with smaller budgets wtf I don't get my restaurant bill dropped when I'm poor eithermekk
    • _niko because you usually know what price range you will be in before you requestmekk
    • works for house builds and renovations because available budget can dictate types of materials, etcmonospaced
    • My cousin wants to turn her standard crappy basement into an apartment. she told me her budget was around $10K, and I told her that was not possibleGnash
    • I told her needed a minimum of 50K for the basics. She will never find anyone able to do it for $10K, and if she did, then they are scamming her.Gnash
    • not so with design. how much does a website cost? how long is a string? It is possible to find some to build a site for 1K or for 10K+Gnash
    • Give someone your usual rate and ask their budget at the same time.freedom
    • lol Gnash, what foundation changes are you making to convert a basement into an apt? I watched $20K finish an entire basement last year.imbecile
    • yeah there's no hard-costs or materials associated with design but there is effort and time. I can make a $200 logo or I can make a $2000 logo._niko
    • @ imbecile. no way $20K will do it - not here, anyway. it'll be at least 10K just for a bathroom. add kitchen and mechanicals... 20K won't cut itGnash
    • unless you're crapping in a bucket and heating soup on a hotplate - then you're good.Gnash
    • Rate (only) means nothing; you can say your rate is $X but then it takes you 10 or 100 or 1000 hrs to complete the project. Huge differences w/ the same rate.Krassy
    • @Krassy exactly. IME it tends to be those 'don't do detail' types who obsess over rate in isolation. One may be twice as much but three times as quick...MrT
    • However, we all relate to this but with some empathy, it's just both sides trying to maximise what they get out of the situation.MrT
    • and if you've no empathy and a nice business card, what does that make you?MrT
