I used only PD150 and DVX100 and only played with XL1. And yeah, PD150 and XL1 cuts into white and black quicker then film. Still comparing the cost saying that DV is crap is HUGE overstatement.
If you are using FCP3 (or below) then color correction is a bit tedious so most people don't play enough with it. I use Avid Xpress Pro - it has a superb color corrector. There is nothing one can't do to the footage to make it relatively easily film like.
In the end cost of film/devolopment kill film in favor of DV.
