i'm not sure about the security part in todays market. whether you're corporate/in-house or studio/freelance you can become useless at a moments notice.
i've always worked in-house at medium-large corporations. i just prefer the atmospher; suprisingly enough.
course, i'm not a designer. i hear the arguments all the time about how it kills creativity. dunno about that. but, for server admin and programming...i prefer corporate to small shops any day.
i work for a relatively small organization now and honestly, i can't handle the mindnumbing political squables that happen here.
a lot speak on the hassles of corporate department politics, but i have more trouble with middle managers in this small shop than i did in the huge conglomorant.
i'm (sort of) a director. so, i have say. but, i'll tell you what...middle managers think they run the place. and everyone one of them thinks their 'department' is the tits.
