I wanted to get another newt so I asked my mom what happened to my first one. I couldn't remember how my newt named (creatively) Newt, died. She said it kept getting out of his enclosure and finding him time and time again all crispy and dried out. He was semi-aquatic, kinda like me. The last time he got out he predictably didn't reconstitute. In my elementary school mind, Newt went to the "farm" where all pets retire. Surely, I registered it as something more realistic at the time but I really don't remember because like all childhood pets it was really my mom's responsibility. The flushing of Newt down the toilet is scrubbed from my memory. (Note to Mom: The passing of Newt -- that you killed -- was painless for me so thank you.)

Mom and I recently brainstormed about 2018 pets that are not dog or cat (Caveat: I really want a dog). She suggested a turtle. But, you know what? Turtles live too long although it might be my only chance at a namesake pet (Shellie II -- thats the second for all yall sans-serif folks). Regretfully, I don't think I'll ever live that life span comment down. I'm good with a 12-15 year pet run but 20-30 years -- I can't do that kind of commitment. A turtle baby today could be a 65 year-old turtle mom. Turtles are a young man's game. Sure, I could adopt a mature turtle, but I'm really feeling a pet baby tbh. My optimal pet won't see me through retirement if not for pet parent malpractice. You don't know what you've got til it's gone, nahmeen?

    Poll: Cold hearted or nah?
