Interesting series presented on thenewyorkerphoto instagram stream, this week taken over by Sarah Lewis, a professor at Harvard who teaches about art, race, and justice. Take a look: https://www.instagram.com/newyor…

Former White House Photographer Pete Souza has captured this image of a young boy, Jacob Philadelphia with his family on a visit with his family to see President Obama. His parents let him ask one question of the President. “I want to know if my hair is just like yours,” he told Mr. Obama. The President asked him to repeat the question and when he did, he invited Jacob to touch it and see for himself. We can’t become what we can’t imagine. That takes models, like the one Obama was providing, by confirming that this precious black boy’s body, down to his hair texture, was worthy of his dreams (such as holding the highest political office in the land). This picture brought me to tears when I first saw it. It brings me to tears now, but largely out of joy, knowing that we have work to do and I’m dedicating my life to trying to do my part.

    • I miss having a real adult leader and upstanding man as president.monospaced
    • Aww, how quaint. Prez as pet zoo. Real? Under Barack/Hillary, Dems lost 900+ state seats, 12 governors, 69 House seats, 13 Senate seats.BustySaintClaire
    • ^There are several other photographs highlighted by Sarah that don't involve Obama, if that helps.PeterPancake
    • Birthers always hated and were resentful of the first black president. They'll never get over it or forgive those who voted for an educated proper black man.utopian
    • So what, he was still a better president, and person, than trump.monospaced
