Been thinking of picking up a turntable just for listening to music at home. My wife really wants one for some reason, and I love audio equipment. I used to play around with turntables back in the '90s rave days, but never considered them for my home audio seeing as everything was more convenient in a digital format.

Anyway, I am perfectly aware that it's easy to spend thousands on an audiophile's wet dream of a system, but I'm not really into that. What's a good-sounding, entry-level turntable for home use that is entry-level priced?

I'm looking at units as cheap as the Audio-Technica LP60 ($99) up to their LP120 ($299), as well as the Orbit Basic ($179) and Orbit Plus ($299). If anyone has any advice, that would be cool.

    • Entry level Pro-Ject, Rega or Music Hall. LP120 is not a bad choice, but for a few bucks more, you could do much better in that price range.DRIFTMONKEY
    • Verdict still out on Orbit, but you have to go through some effort to change between 33 and 45. They do seem like a good deal though.DRIFTMONKEY
    • Numark PT01 Scratch and get yourself some 7" scratch vinyl. You'll have more fun than you can handle ... plus you can play other vinyl ;)microkorg
    • Spend a bit more to upgrade your cartridge. Ortofon blue.DRIFTMONKEY
    • Do you have an integrated amp? You'll need a receiver with phono otherwise, or you can buy a separate pre amp.DRIFTMONKEY
    • I have no interest in "scratching." Just listening to music :)monospaced
    • I have a top-of-the-line A/V receiver and speakers, so all I need is a good turntable. I'll check out the other options listed here.monospaced
    • Also looks like many new models have pre-amps built in, knowing most people don't have their own pre-ams like I do.monospaced
