If you sent the CV unsolicited you can probably expect to be roundly ignored unless it simply screams "I am fantastically talented" the moment someone looks at it. If you are replying to an advertised post then it would be common courtesy for the company to reply to you to acknowledge your application if nothing else.
My agency is tiny, but we still get a few hundred applications every year and 90% of them are looking for a job in the wrong industry if their CV is anything to go by. I do actually try to reply to them, but sometimes I just don't have the time.
I don't think I'd object to someone ringing and asking about whether their CV had arrived in the post, but if I wasn't interested, I'd say so and I would hope that would be enough. I don't want to have a conversation about where people are going wrong.
Your website looks good LouBot so I wouldn't have thought you'd find it too hard to find a position somewhere decent.
